About Ben Board

I've worked in video games since 1997, both as a developer making games and at platforms helping studios succeed, and I'm now with the Business Development team at Epic Games Europe, working with folks using Unreal Engine.Before Epic I led the design, development and live operations of free-to-play mobile racing IP 'Race Kings', which received iOS App Store banner placement in the US, UK and over 100 other countries.Previously I ran the dev team for free-to-play phenomenon 'CSR Racing', converting it to an ongoing service with long-term profitability, through competitive analysis, metrics, and game mechanic and UI design. That followed four years at Microsoft, where I was a founding member of the Xbox European developer relations team and built a network of hundreds of Xbox developers across the region.And before that I was a programmer at Bullfrog, ran the 'Fable' scripting team at Lionhead, and produced PC/console games in Australia.Very well connected with European developers and publishers at senior levels. Deep knowledge of game development across traditional and free-to-play.Long engagement with wider industry through conference advisory boards, publications, conference speaking, career evangelism, STEMNET, the Creative Skillset council, and the BAFTA awards.

At the time employing 40 people, who had been working for over a year, and later reaching nearly 60, and with a number of major challenges to overcome, I did major work on the budget, the production schedule and the game content, and reorganised the team into smaller feature teams to improve focus and ownership. I took the game through the bulk of production, leaving a few months before launch to return to the UK.

    Producer, Project Manager and overseer of the design direction for Heatseeker, an arcade-action jet fighter game for PS2, Wii and PSP, released in March 2007. Taking a short high-concept from our publisher (big explosions, glorifying and worshipping jets) and working closely with them, I took complete ownership of the project's development internally, directing many aspects of the design to make an exciting, action-packed, accessible and spectacular game, creating and maintaining the schedule, and managing the daily needs of 30 full-time staff. Heatseeker started as a short-term slot-filler project for the publisher but we made it into much more: a high-class, highly marketable contender, an exciting and timely early title for the Wii, with some excellent coverage, helping to develop our studio's relationship with that publisher. Together with a great team I'm very proud of what we achieved.
