I was hired by and reported to the CTO with the primary objective to put the operations of ModCloth’s technical stack in order and move the company over to Salesforce Commerce Cloud (Demandware). I spent the first 6 months of my life moving all the previously homebrewed ruby ecommerce site from a platform as a service (Joyent) to either demandware or amazon AWS. Almost all of the move of services that make ModCloth special were replicated in Amazon and an api gateway was implemented. We did all this with myself and one other engineer. After we successfully moved over, I took over technical operations and support. Rebuilding this team to support the new platform. Then in a serendipitous event, ModCloth was purchased by Walmart. This meant that all the work to move from Joyent to AWS was ultimately repeated to move from AWS to Azure.

Walmart purchased ModCloth in late 2017, shortly afterward the CTO left I took the majority of the responsibilities over. I am now the executive in charge of all technology engineering and operations. Primary responsibilities include the day to day operations of all engineers, outsourced vendors, and the technology stack. My direction in this position has saved ModCloth millions in YoY costs and stabilized the technology stack. Implementing better, more flexible, technology along the way. Large initiatives such as an Enterprise Service Bus, moving technology into azure, bringing knowledge in house, and owning our technology have been the work for the last year.Adopting agile development practices and pushing to a Dev Ops aligned environment has also played a large part in my team’s ability to be so successful.

Dynamics is a startup company that needed real infrastructure for a service based digital credit card. This meant our own data centers and credit card personalization services. I spent 5 years at Dynamics building 3 data centers, and a fully PCI, Visa, Mastercard compliant credit card personalization facility. Because Dynamics was a startup, I did all this with only 3 other people, and it included the corporate Information Technology. When I left we had 5 people total in the department. We had around 300 physical machines, and approximately 1100 virtual machines. This included all networking, internet, physical structure, power and cooling. Dynamics was an awesome adventure, and I look back at some great times there. From late nights racking servers, to calculating redundant power, and finally reviewing nagios configurations for heat, cooling and security. We used ESXi, XenServers, NetApps, Cisco switches and some really cool devices like peplinks to do aggregated, highly stable systems.
