Helping people with their website builds, updates, and maintenance allowed me to hone my ability to work on multiple projects at a time, continually offer excellent support, and collaborate with a team to make sure everything was running as smoothly as possible. Delegation, time-management, and streamlining workflows all gave me excellent experience I could add to what I’d learned in running my own small business.

Working at a gym allowed me to feed my passion for fitness for the first time professionally. I had the opportunity to teach classes and build personalized workouts, as well as interfacing with gym members from sign-up to their daily welcome. I also leveraged my past experience to streamline the gym’s member records and reports so the owner could have increased visibility into revenue and participation.

ScoutLands was a project I was engaged with from the ground up. Building a brand and bringing on talented individuals to help get it up and running taught me a lot about the beginning stages of small businesses and passion projects. Working on a print magazine also gave me some new insights into managing projects and accounting for all the steps of getting a project all the way to finished product.

As the manager for over 900 small business accounts, I learned a lot about how to provide excellent service to a wide range of different businesses, something that I’ve continued to do for my own clients. Working in a corporate setting also helped me see how small businesses interact with larger corporations, and how solutions and services for small businesses have to be different than those for the corporate world.

Although I helped in various ways throughout my years growing up, when I was older, I was able to use some of the professional education and experience I’d gained to promote the family business and help it transition into retail. I brought the business up to speed by updating the website, creating marketing materials, establishing a social media presence, running email campaigns, and implementing a point of sale and credit card processing system.

Helping people has been a consistent theme in my work experiences. Working as an admissions counselor allowed me to foster relationships with students (and their families) and guide them through the start of their college careers. I also expanded my ability to develop creative ways to market and connect with people as I planned and advertised events to keep prospective and current students engaged with the university.

Summer camp might seem like an odd place to experience professional development, but my time on the Media Team at Beulah Beach was instrumental in making me the professional I am today. Learning to manage a team, work inside tight time constraints, and keep the creative juices flowing were just a few of the lessons I learned that continue to serve me well today.
