About Ben Drucker

I'm an experienced software engineer, both as a professional and hobbyist (github.com/bendrucker). I got my start in software as an entrepreneur building full-stack products and gradually transitioned into deeper layers of the stack at successive startups. Currently I'm working primarily in Go on infrastructure and developer tooling, much of it related to Terraform. Before that I worked in JavaScript on both the client and server and released hundreds of open-source packages along the way, some of which I continue to actively maintain.Much as I love to dive deep into technical problems, I also enjoy bridging the gap from the software stack to the customer/business. In past roles I've coached engineers on how to think about SLOs, led implementations of RUM and other user analytics tools, and managed SaaS vendor relationships.

Ben Drucker Work Experience Details
  • Push Cash
    Founding Engineer
Push Cash Mar 2024 - Present
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
  • Observe, Inc.
    Staff Engineer
    Observe, Inc. Oct 2022 - Dec 2023
    San Mateo, California, Us
I joined the integrations team at Observe to lead Terraform-related development at Observe, including the Observe Terraform provider (Go) and various Terraform-related tooling and workflows. Observe's built-in "App" integrations are backend by Terraform modules and so the core application invokes Terraform as part of customer actions in the UI. As part of the integrations team, I also supported customers in ingesting their data into Observe, providing deep expertise on Kubernetes and AWS gained in the field.Later I (and the Terraform provider) transitioned into the API infrastructure team, responsible for all meta-features and infrastructure related to the Observe API. I led the development of outbound data sharing, which allows data in Observe to be accessed via customers' Snowflake accounts. I developed the API and Terraform provider and worked closely with the data backend team that implemented the Snowflake shared views.
  • Scoop Technologies, Inc.
    Principal Platform Engineer
Scoop Technologies, Inc. Dec 2017 - Oct 2022
    San Francisco, California, Us
I joined Scoop as a Senior Platform Engineer to help the company evolve a mixed AWS infrastructure managed by CloudFormation with some services running directly on EC2 and others on an ECS-based PaaS to a single container platform. I led the transition of all of these workloads onto Kubernetes, using Terraform to manage the cluster infrastructure.Later, I led the company's transition from CloudFormation first to full Terraform adoption, using a variety of providers (e.g., Datadog, PagerDuty, Okta) to manage key SaaS dependencies, and later to full continuous integration/deployment via Terraform Cloud. This enabled the ops-oriented team I joined to truly become a platform team, building capabilities and useful abstractions for developers rather needing to perform infrastructure changes on their behalf.
  • Eaze
    Senior Engineer
    Eaze Jul 2015 - Nov 2017
    Los Angeles, Us
I joined Eaze as part of the first batch of full-time engineers. My initial work focused on the mobile web application. After rewriting that to improve performance and quality, my focus gradually moved to the backend services that had been more resistant to refactoring. I worked on high level service architecture, rolling out an API gateway, inter-service authentication, and other infrastructure engineers needed to write the first business API services that were independent of the original .NET monolith.I helped lead Eaze's transition from manually configured Azure infrastructure to AWS, managed as version controlled CloudFormation templates. This was my first hands-on experience with low-level cloud infrastructure and I learned how to build configuration, route virtual networks, plan migrations and more. I developed an open source tool for copying Azure Blob Storage objects to S3 (https://github.com/bendrucker/azure-blob-to-s3). We were ultimately successful in transitioning Eaze's production operations from Azure to AWS with minimal downtime and continued to refine the tooling to provide self-service infrastructure access to engineers.
