At Sawyer Laboratory, my teams are pioneering new approaches to optimize the flow of information between humans and machines, revolutionizing interaction paradigms.

My teams rethink how information moves from human to machine, and back. The ancient tool of typography is one we are re-engineering for our digital future. The goal: permanently enhancing human communication through machine-learning infused information design. Our multi-disciplinary team leverages psychophysics, neuroscience, and bespoke interface design, in collaboration with Fortune 500 companies and major government agencies.

Adobe, Readability Matters, and Google have joined forces with my team to research the digital written word and re-engineer it for our informationally complex future.

With MIT's AgeLab and Center for Transport & Logistics (CTL), I explored human attention in the context of semi-autonomous surface transport. I led the Clear Information Presentation consortium, in partnership with Google and Monotype, expanding the science of glanceable reading, and highly legible typography for operational settings. As a technical team member for the AHEAD Consortium, I built cognitive models of demand used in building the interface of increasingly autonomous vehicles in cooperation with industry partners including , Honda, Jaguar Landrover, Suburu, DENSO, Aptiv, and Panasonic. With MIT's International Design Center, I taught an IAP class in Human Factors Engineering (humanfactors.mit.edu for more information). I provided subject matter expertise for the Martin Trust Center for Entrepreneurship.

I worked on research into on signal prevalence effects in attention, in the context of Cyber-defense. In conjunction with Dr. William Helton, I also deployed the Email Testbed (ET), a cyberdefense testbed I previously built while working with the USAF 711th HPW. Finally, I explored the beautiful country of New Zealand.

Within the BATMAN unit I evaluated the attentional demands of combat interfaces destined for Special Forces units. This work included designing and deploying a purpose-built battlefield distraction simulator at The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA).

In collaboration with Dr. Joel Warm I conducted research into vigilant attention in a variety of contexts, including driving and cyber defense, and published conference proceedings and journal articles. I also designed and piloted a testbed for evaluation of email-delivered cyberattacks.

I designed and communicated research while writing funding instruments with my Director Dr. Peter A. Hancock. While growing a team from 15 to 50, I executed on funded research plans, and maintained and expanded the capabilities of MIT^2, which included driving simulators, Goggle-based VR installations, high-speed eye-tracking equipment, and a virtual robotics lab. Tech Take-Out helped people better understand their computers without asking them to leave the comfort of their homes or offices. Our team specialized in assisting retirees and older professionals to maximize their considerable skills and knowledge by learning to use cutting-edge technology.

I maintained and expanded the facilities of TRG, including rebuilding and designing data collection and aggregation tools for their fleet of three connected driving simulators.

While assisting in driving and goggle based simulation work with Dr. A. Cleary and Dr. B. Clegg I completed independent research, an honors thesis, & co-authored resultant publications. Work from this experience was covered by Scientific American and the BBC, and has recently been featured in a TEDx talk.

The Teacher Ben Professional English team specialized in building social language skills. Courses focused on presenting and debating complex ideas, communicating in informal settings, humor, and social norms. We assisted the Taiwanese professionals of English speaking companies including Sony, Roche, Corning, IBM and HSBC. We assisted students who had recently been admitted to universities in English speaking countries, including Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, and Oxford.

Ookkii allowed young people to connect with their finances through the power of sharing their purchases with one another. I was primarily responsible for development of the business plan and investor relations. OOKKII won multiple awards in Taiwan, was presented at DEMO.COM 2008, and is included in the book "50 Interviews: Entrepreneurs".

As an travel investment consultant I lived abroad in dozens of countries sourcing, building, and communicating the financial, attitudinal survey, legal and contractual data necessary for investors to vet opportunities for tour destination development. We built one of the earliest cloud-based travel reservations systems for site59.com, which was later acquired by Travelocity.

Learned Spanish by immersion in Guatemala. Traveled to 18 Central and South American countries to meet vendors and partners. Responsible for sales and vendor relations, as well as ticketing and support for the SABRE travel reservations system.

My responsibilities with this leading provider of student travel included maintaining hardware to interface with the SABRE travel reservations system, as well as sales, customer, and vendor relations. Traveled to observe and create improved sales strategies for tour companies including Contiki and STA (Student Travel Australia).

I was responsible for the up-time and improvement of hundreds of SCO Unix servers which supported thousands of Telephone Service Representatives on WISE terminals in placing millions of calls each month.

Carpe Datum specialized in helping small to medium business move archaic POS, inventory, and other databases onto contemporary software and hardware. I exited successfully, and the new owner moved the company moved to Chicago. The company today specializes in building toolsets and leveraging expertise for migrating medium to large computing infrastructures into the cloud, and between cloud solutions.

I stocked groceries, ran the till, and learned to dress beef and pork under the supervision of a master butcher.
