In nearly 20 years of working in PMOs I have learned a basic truth; project management is simple, project managers are complicated. It’s one of those professions that encompasses an incredible variety of experiences, disciplines, and experiences. From MBA MBB project managers to self-trained small company PMs we all do the same basic things in wildly different ways. Finding a way to create a single approach that works for such different backgrounds is challenging.Working with a lot of different PMOs and methods over the years I always ended up in the same place. Simplicity and consistency are what cements your value and contribution to a team.Building a practice has given me the opportunity to test this philosophy in the real world. We work with small teams that have large responsibilities. Focusing on simplicity and straightforward project management has proven to be a winning formula for the teams we work with.My personal project now is codifying our years of experience into a simplified method of tacking projects and building PMOs. I love everything about bringing order to chaos, I just don’t think it needs to be as hard as we make it.
