Benedict Phillips is an artist, writer and consultant. His practice encompasses a broad range of methodologies, researching and reacting to the people and places in which he places himself. Alongside his more personal works Benedict has considerable experience as a Lead artist, mentor and creative consultant working with architects, archaeologists, computer programmers and public agencies. He is a Director of Digital media Labs which he Established 2010, as a way of creating a new model of commissioning digital public art.Working with a myriad of mediums underpinned by a strong consistent working process and commitment to a high quality production, his practice is driven by ideas, the development of which jumps back and forth between drawing, writing, speaking, listening, making and performing. This generates conceptual and visual resources from which the work can build until the final process and outcome is revealed. Photography, sculpture and performance have always been key outcomes of these projects.Benedict’s public consultancy practice sees him working closely with technologists, curators, teachers, engineers, designers and planners. This led him to set up People and Place in 2008 in collaboration with Jonathan Lindh, architect, at Leeds Environmental Design Agency and John Oxley, City Archeologist for York. Working with groups to develop creative platforms for multi-agency communication and projects development, he has a genuine interest in people and the spaces they inhabit; whether these are imagined, social, political, physical or designed spaces. He has exhibited nationally and internationally for the past 20 years, working with numerous organisations including the V&A, Arts Council England, ISEA, NHS and Arts Catalyst.
