What makes the difference?Have you ever seen the painting Blood Red Mirror by Gerhard Richter? It's just a red painted canvas, but it sold for 1.3 Million$. How is it possible to increase the value of a blank canvas, wrapped around a wooden frame by more than 850.000%, with just adding some red color pigments to it? That I guess is a perfect example of understanding desire, scarcity, market needs, and timing. Without nostalgia, every piece of art would be substitutable. The copy wouldn't be less valuable than the original, and according to the law of supply and demand, neither the copy nor the original would be worth a dime. One could argue, but almost every product nowadays is somewhat substitutable. In most cases, the decision between one company or another is a matter of perceived value.That's where marketing comes into play. Before I fell in love with marketing, I studied Music in England. In order to be successful in the music industry you need to do much more than just creating beautiful pieces of art. You need to generate demand and interest by building an engaging environment surrounding your brand and your product. (Aka. Marketing)Opposing to what many marketers say, I don't think that marketing is a numbers game. I genuinely believe that the recipe is a compound of mathematics, psychology and true dedication towards recognizing and understanding market needs during a particular moment in time. Think about it. If it was a numbers game, we would have already beaten the end boss and kissed the princess by now. But marketing is infinitely more complex than looking at some numbers and changing accordingly. The process of really understanding the desire, the pain and the needs of a particular market is a long, but rewarding endeavor and it has so many valuable lessons to teach.
