Project title: To what extent does Carl von Clausewitz’s ‘On War’ accurately explain the factors amounting to the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea, and the subsequent conflict between Ukraine and Russia?-This was a research project that was undertaken with support from Dr Oz Hassan from the University of Warwick and Dr Adrian Hyde-Price at the University of Gothenburg, thus requiring consistent co-ordination with both individuals to ensure the thorough development of this initiative. - As part of this project, I was awarded a 1500 Euro grant to spend two weeks at Gothenburg undertaking the research.-This research has also been presented at the ICUR (the International Conference for Undergraduate Research) in September; and had been accepted to be presented at the WCUR (World Conference for Undergraduate Research).-The objective of this research was to critically evaluate whether von Clausewitz remains pertinent to explaining contemporary conflicts, especially given the current academic push to discover a new epoch of war (such as Mary Kaldor's New Wars, amongst others). To best do this, Clausewitz's work was localised in the conflict within Europe, which meant that the selection of Crimea as the primary case study allowed for a unique analysis of the current security environment within Europe. This dissertation attempts to draw out policy recommendations based upon the work undertaken to outline possible means through which peace can be ensured. All of this is tactfully undertaken so as to maintain an awareness of the current conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, hence why this work will solely consider the annexation of Crimea in 2014, and not the ensuing war within the Donbas.
  • Defence Leaders
    Student Consultant
    Defence Leaders Jun 2022 - Jul 2022
    Virtual
-This 4-week virtual internship was organised by the Warwick TeamWork project, an organism that allows students from many universities to come together and help companies resolve problems or undertake research so as to streamline their operations. Collaborated with students from the University of Toronto and Cornell University to achieve our objective: find more means through which to grow attendance at the conference organised by Defence Leaders.-This role required consistent work alongside group members to undertake quality research on current helicopter development programmes across a host of countries, before ultimately providing concrete recommendations as to how best to establish or enact them from a business perspective.-The collaborative nature of this project was invaluable, providing great insights into how to work alongside other students internationally, across different time-zones, and with a shared goal. While initially challenging, providing individual tasks and providing mutual support proved to be the most instrumental technique in allowing the work to be undertaken to a high standard. -Following a 40min presentation on our research and suggestions for improvement, it was explicitly stated that our work was of extremely high quality, and that it would come to be implemented over the coming weeks so as to establish a larger base of clientele to whom the event could be best organised.
