Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve

As part of the NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS), I managed the System Wide Monitoring Program in collaboration with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at the Hudson River NERRS. The program includes water quality and meteorological monitoring with multi-parameter sondes, handheld meters, grab samples and nutrient analysis, radio telemetry, data logger programming, freshwater tidal wetland research (water quality, sediment accretion, biological plant composition), a certified National Water Levels Observation Network Tide Station, and more.

I managed a portfolio of nearly 200 conservation easements in Westchester and Putnam Counties in New York. I annually monitored each easement and am was charge of easement land owner interactions with the Westchester Land Trust. I also assisted in the management of 29 nature preserves. The Westchester Land Trust has preserved nearly 8,000 acres of land in the Westchester area as well as stewarding nature preserves open to the public with hiking trails.

Engaging the community and town officials in issues concerning the environment, the Environmental Conservation Commission coordinates a variety of events and citizen science projects. I managed the NYSDEC WAVE Sampling program with the Town of Rochester ECC as a Local Coordinator. After moving out of the county in January 2016 I resigned from the Board.

During my time as the Coastal Training Program Assistant I worked primarily on the Hudson River Sustainable Shorelines Project, which aims to deliver science based information on coastal management into the hands of decision makers.• Organized and facilitated workshops for 30-80 professionals on coastal zone management• Managed Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve website (www.hrnerr.org)• Researched submerged aquatic vegetation and ecologically enhanced shoreline techniques• Designed and implemented a Sustainable Shoreline Demonstration Site monitoring plan• Served on technical team for creating bulkhead enhancement units in the Hudson River• Operated small boats and assisted in fisheries projects and education programs as needed • Initiated and piloted a GIS inventory of candidate shoreline stabilization sites

During my time as a research intern at the Hudson River Research Reserve at Norrie Point I assisted in all tasks relating to laboratory and field work.• Worked in the field and lab obtaining and analyzing water samples to determine water quality for the Hudson River Estuary and tributaries. • Assisted in managing and collecting data from weather stations in the Hudson River. • Assisted in vegetation sampling to determine annual progress of species including invasives in tidal wetlands in the Hudson River Estuary.• Studied and monitored Surface Elevation Tables (SETs) in order to discover more about sediment accretion in wetlands and how it related to climate change and rising sea levels.
