My research combined two forms of self-healing concrete: bacterial concrete and Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC). Bacterial concrete employs bacteria to re-glue cracks using biocalcification, while ECC ties the concrete together with tailored fibers enabling the cracks to stay so small that they can heal spontaneously. I combined these two forms of concrete and tested the "hybrid" in multiple settings, including lab, underground and field environments. I also ran tests to assess the compatibility between the bacteria and fibers. The results show that the combined approach self-healed more effectively and that self-healing was statistically as effective in the underground environment as in the optimal control environment.
