Managing a small group of engineers and designers to craft exceptional user experiences. Since 2012, Foundry376 has helped build and launch products for dozens of clients including the State of Tennessee, Daylight.xyz, Snappt, Dagster Labs, Stanford, OptioLabs, and Schneider Electric. In addition to client work, Foundry376 builds and ships products of it's own, most recently Mailspring, the cross-platform email client, and Spark Inspector, a developer tool that served as the inspiration for Xcode's view hierarchy debugger.

I led the front-end engineering team developing Nylas Mail (https://github.com/nylas/nylas-mail), a modern, open-source mail client built with React and Electron (an application shell combining NodeJS and the Chromium Embedded Framework). Designed and implemented significant parts of the application, including a high-performance, observable SQLite ORM (http://github.com/bengotow/electron-rxdb) and a set of React elements that inject and isolate interface elements written by plugin developers.I spoke at ReactEurope 2015 and co-organize the Bay Area Electron meet-up. Day to day, I cleared the product's critical path, coordinated releases, and helped the team meet their personal and professional goals.

Served on the five-person architecture design review board for the OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission to assess a planned SPOC software design for a satellite data processing system.

Performed an extensive review of the company's software and provided advice to the interim CEO and board. Took on a role as a interim CTO to manage the four-person engineering team and planned development sprints around a revised long-term strategy. MadGravity built a multi-channel messaging platform for the faith and non-profit space, and during my tenure we converted critical parts of the .NET codebase to a stack based on NodeJS and RabbitMQ to reduce costs and improve reliability.

Building the Kodiak Reporting cloud: the missing link between educational apps and the classroom. Track students through apps, identify struggling learners, and more—Kodiak is built from the ground-up for home and classroom iPads, and is available to developers for free. As founder and CTO, I architected and built the data processing service that powered the app's analytics in NodeJS, Redis and RDS. The service scaled and allowed the company to keep it's burn rate low while pursuing educational markets.

First engineering hire. Worked with the founders to implement core features of their micropublishing product in Ruby on Rails and Javascript / Coffeescript, including document revision handling, real-time collaboration with Socket.IO, analytics collection and storage on DynamoDB, and a full-featured API for third parties. Worked with the CTO to build and maintain an extensive test suite and learned AngularJS and Backbone to build several features, including image cropping and scaling in the app's WYSWIG editor and an analytics dashboard.

Designed, developed and marketed Layers, a groundbreaking painting app for the iPhone. Layers was featured on the front page of the App Store and included in an Apple iPhone commercial. Also developed NetSketch, a vector-based collaborative drawing tool, Mathomatic, a symbolic calculator, and Doodle Chat for MEDLMobile, Inc. More than 35,000 apps sold to date. Work has been featured in TUAW, Boing Boing, Macworld, ARS Technica, and more.

Developed an iPhone app for operating room management and perioperative informatics. Integrated the app with existing services allowing doctors to interact with personnel and stream video from operating rooms.

Spearheaded an effort to redesign InsideVandy.com, the Drupal-based web site of the Vanderbilt student paper. The updated website was completed in June and has increased traffic and advertising revenue.

Worked with the Mailtrust team before they were aquired by Rackspace—Tied .NET project into CruiseControl automated build system. Created more than 200 unit tests allowing for fast, less error-prone development by the team.

Architected and built a peer to peer video service in PHP and CSS. Wrote a BitTorrent tracker to drive the underlying peer-to-peer network that resulted in better overall performance, and developed Torrantula—a RealBasic BitTorrent client—from scratch to enable experimentation with non-standard piece picking algorithms. Graphic work on the website helped to market the service to students and prospective clients.
