I have had a varied career path which has included wooden boat building, high quality architectural joinery and 3D computer modelling for architects and designers. My work gradually became more and more technical and I began to teach myself the subjects I was passionate about including Mechanical Engineering and Electronics, until I was finally able to pursue the thing that really fulfils me, which is Mechanical and Electronic Engineering Design. My previous broad experience has fed into the multi-disciplinary approach I take to my work. Being fairly dyslexic, my brain is strongly orientated towards visual, spatial and creative thinking.At this point the 3D CAD work wasn't challenging me or fulfilling my creative side, but I wasn't sure how to move on. I eventually decided just to call myself a Mechanical Design Engineer and see what happened. Amazingly I began to pick up work, building up to the point where I was designing complex automated assembly and test equipment for the automotive sensors sector. You can visit www.benharker.co.uk to see examples of my work during that period.A lull in work when the recession started to bite provided me with the opportunity to pursue an idea I'd had when I first started learning electronics several years earlier: a device for remotely monitoring crack movement in buildings. This evolved into a flexible remote monitoring system capable of handling data from all types of sensors.
