For three months, I participated in an exchange program organized within the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). At the AFMC headquarters in Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), I joined the structural materials failure analysis team at the Air Force Research Laboratory. Working under their mission of mishap prevention, I gained knowledge and experience to take back with me to Robins AFB. My highlights are as follows:- Learned fundamental failure analyses methods and practices while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience.- After consulting with team members, I developed a test plan for a project from the KC-135 program and completed most of the work before I left. Searching for possible replacement parts, I contacted various suppliers. I communicated my findings with the customer through presentations and email.- Networked with fellow materials engineers to strengthen connections within the Air Force and specifically the AFMC.- I gained insight into the organizational differences between maintenance depots and more research-focused laboratories of the Air Force.Though it was for only three months, my time at WPAFB was a transformative one and one that has further motivated me to develop my mindset and skill set as an engineer.
