Process Engineer, Engineering Development Program
Santa Rosa, California, United States
A ~1.5-year rotation program around departments in VIAVI Solutions' Optical Security and Performance division. Emphasis on thin-film coating processes, control, and design. Materials Characterization Laboratory:-Supported the materials characterization group in providing material and failure analysis to both operations and R&D-Identified nanoscale surface features, roughness, using atomic force microscopy (AFM)-Performed elemental surface analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)-Developed applications for use with Zygo NewView9000 white-light interferometer -Gained an understanding of many modern materials characterization methods (SEM, EDS, AFM, XPS, FTIR, CSI/PSI, Light Microscopy, etc. R&D Special Project ; Next Generation Coating Platform Development:- Modeled coating uniformity using several different system layouts in order to achieve extremely low theoretical non-uniformity- Researched the presence of birefringence in fully-dense sputtered coatings- Became well-versed in VIAVI proprietary software for modeling coating uniformity- Developed front-end software interfacing via MATLAB with modern and time-tested proprietary software - Acted as a primary team member in thermal modeling subsystemBatch Coating R&D:- Investigated the development of a new material for use in on-site vacuum coating chambers- Improved understanding of plasma physics and sputtering-based reactive deposition processes- Evaluated coating stress and deposition rates using white-light interferometry and DEKTAK instrumentationEquipment Engineering:- Programmed upgrade to PLC system for pigment control process- Streamlined team & vendor contact Project Management:- Gained an understanding of optical metrology and testing along with the use of Cary-line spectrophotometers- Developed an understanding of Lean manufacturing with an emphasis on process analysis- Worked with the quality team to diagnose areas of handling, cleaning, and production improvement
