Benjamin Alheit Email and Phone Number
I am currently a (postdoctoral) researcher at the University of Twente. My primary research focus is on the modelling of coupled magneto-mechanical behaviour in single and polycrystals in the presence of large plastic deformations. However, I am interested in the micromechanical modelling of solids and associated numerical methods in general.I have several years of experience in lecturing finite element analysis at a postgraduate level. Skills that I use frequently in a research capacity include scientific computing using C++, Python, and Fortran; novel constitutive modelling of solids; automation of various tasks using Python; model order reduction of computationally expensive simulations using machine learning approaches such as surrogate modelling; etc.Check me out on GitHub: https://github.com/BenAlheit

Lecturer For Finite Element AnalysisUniversity Of Cape Town Jul 2020 - Oct 2022City Of Cape Town, Western Cape, South AfricaI lecture a module of the course pertaining to finite element methods for nonlinear partial differential equations. This includes preparing and presenting the course material and setting an implementation project, a test and an exam. -
Finite Element Analysis Head TutorUniversity Of Cape Town Feb 2019 - Jun 2020Cape Town Area, South AfricaI was the tutor for both Introduction to Finite Elements and Finite Element Analysis. As its name suggests, Introduction to Finite Elements introduces students to the finite element method (FEM) through 1D, 2D scalar and finally 2D vector problems. Finite Element Analysis addresses more advanced topics, such as nonlinear problems, time-dependent problems and mixed methods. For both courses, I was responsible for teaching the implementation component of the course, presenting tutorials and marking implementation projects. -
Mechanical Vibrations Head TutorUniversity Of Cape Town Feb 2019 - Jul 2019Cape Town Area, South AfricaI was responsible for presenting tutorials and managing the other tutors. -
Software DeveloperAfferent Software Jul 2019 - Dec 2019City Of Cape Town, Western Cape, South AfricaI worked in the Skunkworks team which is dedicated to rapidly prototyping new innovative products for the company. The team is described by the company's CEO as "a perpetual start-up within a company". Hence, the work I did varied considerably but consisted of creating GUI applications with JavaFX, implementing networking for a VPN tunnel and creating micro-services to be deployed on AWS. -
