Dutch/Australian conductor Benjamin Bayl is equally at home with modern and period instrument orchestras, and in the opera house. Associate Director of the Hanover Band, and Co-founder of the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra, he was the first Australian Organ Scholar of King’s College Cambridge, and then studied conducting at the Royal Academy of Music. An alumnus of the National Opera Studio, he became Assistant Conductor to the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Iván Fischer in 2006, and assisted Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Richard Hickox, Harry Bicket and Ivor Bolton. From 2007-2010 he served as Assistant Artistic Director to the Gabrieli Consort & Paul McCreesh, and also worked with Fischer & Konzerthausorchester Berlin.Benjamin has made highly successful debuts with Mahler Chamber Orchestra (Musikfest Berlin/Berlin Philharmonie & Ruhrtrienniale Festival), Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Bochumer Symphoniker, Bremer Philharmoniker, Sinfonieorchester Aachen, Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín, Orchestra Haydn di Bolzano, Orchestra i Pomeriggi Musicali and Orchestra Filharmonica di Torino, as well as numerous Scandinavian orchestras (Stavanger, Gävle, Umeå, Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense & CPH Phil) conducting a broad range of repertoire from the great Viennese classics, Baroque and Romantic works, and new commissions. He recently made his debut in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw conducting Collegium Vocale Gent & Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and was immediately re-invited for a European tour with the music of CPE Bach. Working extensively in the early music field (as conductor or directing from the keyboard) regular partners include B'Rock, Concerto Copenhagen, Concerto Köln, Wroclaw Baroque Orchestra & Warsaw Chamber Opera.In the realm of opera, he has conducted at Wiener Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, Dutch National Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, Royal Danish Opera, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Danish National Opera, Cartagena Festival, Opera Vlaanderen, Den Norske Opera, Opera Australia, Opera de Oviedo, Budapest State Opera & Polish National Opera.Future highlights include Bayreuth Baroque Festival, Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra & Queensland Symphony Orchestras, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Orkiestra Historyczna in Warsaw’s Chopin Festival, a Schubert Symphony cycle with Hanover Band & Rameau's "Platée" with Oper Stuttgart.
