At Roche Tissue Diagnostics, I serve as a senior mechanical engineer for a world leader in histology/pathology diagnostic equipment. The tissue diagnostics division of the company provides tissue staining equipment that assists pathologists in making diagnosis of many types of acquired and genetic diseases.

I serve as a hardware engineering advisor for Bitbroker Labs, a global startup accelerator and incubator.

In this position, I currently serve as Managing Director for an additive manufacturing (AM) company. This company was founded to address an underserved market for advanced materials (advanced ceramics, CMC’s). The company has been responsible for the development of an innovative AM system and the materials used with it in order to serve markets such as aerospace / defense, nuclear, and the high technology business sectors.My role in this company was that of translating the design from concept to manufactured system. This included detailed input on design of the mechanical and electrical systems, leading operating firmware development, testing prototype sub-assemblies for feasibility, as well as utilizing the in-house machine shop for prototype manufacturing.Documentation was created to detail specific manufacturing methods and techniques, bill of materials, and preliminary user manuals/operating guides.Budgetary estimates created and tracked through prototype and final versions.3D solid modeling was used to evaluate dynamic and static performance of structural components as well as their thermal cycling response. The solid models were also utilized for tolerance stack up analysis for critical assemblies and mechanics and for drawing creation for parts and assemblies. GD&T was utilized for part and assembly tolerancing.Preliminary systems were evaluated for key operating requirements such as film deposition performance and reliability, long duration cycle times, overall life estimation of critical mechanisms, as well as operating software stability.Interfaced with external suppliers in order to improve design manufacturability and to lower costs. Also lead the development of supplier relations to facilitate a smooth transition from prototypeproduction runs to higher volume production.I was also the Principal Investigator and external liaison for a DoD STTR Phase I Grant.

In this role, I was responsible for concept development, design, testing, and manufacturing integration of powder and liquid coating pump systems and applicators. These were complex electro-mechanical systems which required integration to existing control systems. These systems ranged from slow moving, heavy coating applications to high speed can coating systems used throughout the beverage industry.Concept development and prototypes involved patent search for prior art both within the company and through external sources (U.S. Patent Office). NDA’s were executed as required with manufacturing vendors. Alternations to designs based on discoveries during prior art search were made as needed. This ensured protection from both infringement litigationas well as being able to broaden claims for future invention protection.Other roles in this assignment included: preparation of documentation for product release, management of a team of mechanical designers for multiple projects operating in parallel, voice of customer tours and integration into product, special applications development, existing product retrofits and design troubleshooting, and product evaluation and solution development of equipment at customer sites.I had also lead software UI design as well as hardware / software design for a disruptive coating technology.

As a consulting engineer, my role involved design of mechanical HVAC and steam piping systems, DWV piping systems, and well as medical gas distribution and delivery systems at world-renown hospitals throughout the country.Some of my responsibility also included client interaction and communication, field evaluation of existing mechanical and plumbing systems, and contract management with subcontractors while serving as prime contractor of the project.

As an R&D Engineer (intern), my role involved the concept development, modeling, prototype manufacturing, and testing of prototypes in a corporate test lab environment which conformed to medical device test standards. The systems I was involved in designing were related to the power wheelchair and the manual racing wheelchair markets.I was responsible for other tasks such as filing engineering change orders, reporting out to management on project timelines and interim results, and performing customer site visits to address potential design improvements.
