I had strived to become an accountant and certified CPA for several years now, starting at the beginning of high school where I decided it would be my career of choice. Despite this, it seems things turned out a little differently than I would have expected, seeing that my first career in the business world is that of a credit specialist.Math is and has always been my strongest subject growing up, so I have been determined to ultimately land a career dealing with math one way or another. Through my financial and managerial accounting courses during high school, I learned that accounting was more than just adding and subtracting, but rather dealt with the analysis of these financial transactions and how we can use the analyses to make better decisions for companies. This further piqued my interest.Although by this point I knew that the accounting field was for me, I decided to take an opportunity at La Vid Baptist Church at the time to volunteer in their finance team. Here, I would count daily Sunday offerings and record them into Excel worksheets with one other person. Without a doubt in my mind, I would say this experience was greatly beneficial and further advanced my interest for this career.Advancing into Collin College and the University of North Texas, I was able to take more specific classes that would aid me in an accounting career, such as Intermediate/Advanced Accounting, Finance, and Data Analysis among others. After two long years, I finally graduated from college and after an even longer two years, I received my BBA in accounting. While looking through dozens of accounting opportunities, an opening in GM Financial was brought to my attention. Not as an accountant, but rather a credit specialist. I applied to the position and was granted an offer that I ended up accepting.Fast-forward to today, and I'm happily enjoying my time in the company, gaining new connections and new experiences in the position hoping to excel as a credit specialist. I'm unsure on whether I'll pursue this path even further or return to my accounting background in the future, but regardless I plan to learn as much as I can and work to the best of my ability with GMF.
