Trained in Biochemistry while it morphed into Molecular Biology, I have worked with five viral systems that cause diseases of the Central Nervous System, using tools of molecular biology, microbiology, immunology and neuropathology. I would best be described as a molecular neurovirologist. I made original and important findings in each field I have touched. I used the mystery of VSV Defective Interfering Particles to define the Terminator, still a vital concept of negative-strand RNA virus replication. I sequenced most of the first 5 genes of Sendai virus, and then the long polymerase gene and the ends and intercistronic regions of measles virus, thus completing the measles virus genome sequence and making me one of a very few people to sequence an entire paramyxovirus by hand. In HIV-1 AIDS, I identified "Restricted Infection" of astrocytes and defined the concept. I developed a powerful technique of "two-step" in situ PCR. I then went on to define the role of HHV-6 in Pediatric AIDS - but this turned out paradoxically because while HHV-6 has little to do with HIV-1 and neuro-AIDS, it has EVERYTHING to do with autism, MS and PML. The importance of this finding was not understood at the time, and still is not properly appreciated. I hope to be able now to assist with clinical trials based on my findings to treat and cure Multiple Sclerosis and PML, and to reverse the Autism Epidemic.
