Instructor
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Taught and supervised weekly summer camps for children aged 5-15 who learned about engineering and STEM topics in a classroom style setting. I was a part of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Team and was tasked with creating and running experiments and activities that revolved around this discipline. As such, the camps that I was tasked with running revolved heavily around electricity, computers and software for kids. For two weeks of the summer I was also tasked with teaching with a small team outside of Edmonton. Our team would go to small towns and First Nations communities in Alberta for a week at a time to provide programming for children who do not have the same ease of access and opportunities that families that live in large cities do. The goal of the Fred Otto DiscoverE Program is to foster interest in engineering and STEM for children with the hopes of sparking a future education and career. Common responsibilities I encountered include teaching and controlling a classroom, planning and revising activities for campers that relate to engineering topics in a fun and educational way, interacting with parents as well as teaching partners and partners from outside organizations.
