As a member of the Slade Lab, I studied the kinetics involved in the uptake of environmentally-relevant organic nitrates onto secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and the impacts these nitrates have on the phase state of the aerosol. In this work, I routinely synthesized and purified organic nitrates using chromatography, worked in collaboration with other researchers to perform FTIR and NMR analysis of synthesized organic nitrates, and completed flow chamber studies with extensive use (and repairing/troubleshooting) of our Extractive Electrospray Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (EESI-ToF-MS), Scanning Electrical Mobility Spectrometers (SEMS), Electrical Low Pressure Impactors (ELPIs), and gas monitors.In addition to my studies on organic nitrates, I played a pivotal role in an ongoing field study aimed at characterizing the presence of emerging pollutants such as sunscreen additives and bisphenol A in marine aerosol at Scripps Pier. I served as the lead on the EESI-ToF-MS portion of the study, charged with deploying our mass spectrometer on the pier and collecting/processing/analyzing the complex spectra in unison with collected NOx/CO/O3 data via Igor Pro. This study required extensive collaboration with other researchers, out-of-the-box thinking, frequent troubleshooting, and teamwork.By the time of my departure, I was one of the senior-most members of the lab and thus was involved and dedicated to mentorship of newer students and facilitating a supportive, positive, and welcoming culture.

As an intern supporting the research and development team at Firmenich's Lakeland location, I gained valuable experience in the use of GC-MS for the analysis of chemical flavor components in commercial beverages. My duties included routine extraction of essential oils from commercial orange juices followed by analysis via GC-MS and LC-MS, creating a self-updating database for product inventory, formulating flavor blends for commercial partners, and assistance in developing IP for a proprietary flavoring additive.

As a member of Dr. Shengqian Ma's lab, I assisted in the synthesis and testing of metal organic frameworks for gas capture and storage. My duties included synthesizing MOFs and characterizing products via XRD, microscopy, and gas sorption analyzers. I also completed my capstone project under the guidance of Dr. Jeff Cunningham, where I aimed to develop a method of enhancing the filtration of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) during wastewater treatment. This work required the custom manufacture of a small reverse-osmosis filter and development of a detection method for NDMA utilizing HPLC.

I assisted with transportation research on methods of lessening personal vehicle usage and acted as a main point of contact with study participants. I routinely met with study participants to aid them in completion and adherence to the study, logged and tracked study participation in Excel, and routinely updated the study website.

Designed athletic/health programs and assisted individuals in reaching their fitness goals.
