I am the clinical student coordinator and preceptor for the surgical ICU. I interview and accept AP students to the surgical ICU who show a strong interest in critical medicine. I teach students hands-on and give lectures during their rotations on critical care topics. I communicate directly with graduate program faculty regarding their students. I also provide students and their programs feedback regarding performance as well as areas of strength / weakness and outline areas for growth and improvement.

I currently work in a level 1 trauma ICU taking care of a wide variety of critically ill patients. These patients populations include trauma, general surgery, neurosurgical, cardiothoracic, orthopedic, plastics, ENT and liver transplant. My role includes the assessment and management of shock, respiratory failure, sedation, ventilator management, renal failure as well as coordination of patient care between surgical teams in conjunction with an attending physician intensivist. I perform procedures including central line and vascular catheter placement, arterial line placement and thoracentesis. I additionally perform chest tube placement and intubation with attending supervision. My responsibilities also include the management of mechanical support devices including intra-aortic balloon pump, Impella and V-V / V-A ECMO. In the cardiothoracic ICU, my additional responsibilities include epicardial pacemaker management and chest tube management.

I worked in the Medical ICUs at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Beverly Hospital and Winchester Hospital. I practiced with a team of high-performing and autonomous Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in conjunction with supervising physician intensivists. My role included the assessment and management of critically ill patients. I was responsible for the management of shock, respiratory failure and ARDS, mechanical ventilation, sedation, renal failure and coordination of patient care. I communicated with consulting specialists, patient's families and lead conversations related to end-of-life and goals of care. My role additionally included participating in rapid responses and code blues throughout the hospital, leading the rapid response team with nursing and respiratory therapy. I performed consultations on critically ill patients and fielded consults as well as transfer requests from outside hospitals. This role additionally required initiating and coordinating transfer of patients to a higher level of care (progressive care units or direct admission to the Medical ICU). I performed procedures including central line and vascular catheter placement, arterial line placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar punctures. I also performed intubations with direct physician oversight.

I completed a one-year fellowship program in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. My fellowship training included significant didactic work and exposure to many medicine specialties including gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology and palliative care medicine. My training enabled me to become proficient in the management of shock, respiratory failure, ventilator management, sedation, renal failure and liver failure. I also received procedural training in central line placement, arterial line placement, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis and chest tube placement.
