About Benjamin Chan

On exceptional leave from HKU medical school, I am a fourth-year student at Oxford studying Neuroscience and Biomedical Sciences with a near-full scholarship courtesy of the Hong Kong government. I have been awarded the title of Scholar at St. Catherine's College Oxford. Specifically, I am passionate about value attribution, decision-making and other cognitive mechanisms. Currently, I work in the Department of Experimental Psychology under the supervision of Dr. Laurence Hunt on the interaction between covert attention and decision-formation in naturalistic decision-making.Beyond academics, I am active in NGO work and cultivating activism in education for character development. I strive for equal accessibility of quality education to all. I have led four NGOs to promote mentorship-based educational opportunities to underprivileged students. My current post is in EdQuity Hong Kong Foundation Limited, a registered charity under Section 88 of the HK Inland Revenue Department. My focus now is to promote and integrate discussion-based learning into school curricula in Hong Kong.Recruitment note: No matter where you are based, you are more than welcome to message me about joining or partnering with EdQuity HK to improve education accessibility and promote discussion-based learning.

Integrated Master'S Student

Current
Laboratory Of Decision Dynamics, Department Of Experimental Psychology, University Of Oxford

Oxford, England, United Kingdom

How do we decide between different courses of action in our daily lives? How does decision making interplay with information search and attention? How do changes in our brain chemistry affect the decisions that we make? The Laboratory of Decision Dynamics addresses these questions by collecting brain imaging data in humans performing simple decision tasks. We particularly focus on using techniques with high temporal resolution to study how decision making unfolds across time. We relate our findings to cognitive and computational models of evidence accumulation and information search. We collaborate with other researchers who record cellular data in animals performing similar tasks. We also study the effects of drugs relevant to psychiatry on brain activity during decision making tasks. Our research aims to provide some of the 'missing links' between molecular and behavioural explanations of drug interventions in health and disease. We are based at the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford, and have affiliations with the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging and the Department of Psychiatry in Oxford.

Final Honour School Undergraduate Researcher

Oxford, England, United Kingdom

I did my Final Honour School Part B Project at Lak Lab under the supervision of Dr. Armin Lak and Dr. Matthias Fritsche. Using photometric data from mice trained on the 2AFC visuomotor task, as specified in the International Brain Laboratory protocol, my project investigated the relationship between acetylcholine and dopamine in rodent decision-making. In this project, I used Python to perform data analysis, including performing deconvolution through kernel regression and simple cross-correlation between kernels. Additionally, I verified correct probe insertion through histology in perfused mice. From our website [https://www.laklab.org/]: Lak Lab is under the Department of Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics in the University of Oxford. We study neuronal circuit mechanisms that underlie learning and decision-making. Our approach is to employ state-of-the-art circuit tools, including high-count electrophysiology, calcium imaging and optogenetics, in combination with highly-controlled behavioural tasks in mice, and computational modelling.
