About Benjamin Chong

I am a student at the University of Alberta pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. In addition to having a keen interest in medical-related research and advancement of technology, I have a passion for health, networking and volunteerism. My areas of interest are biochemistry, neuroscience, and the implementation of artificial intelligence in medicine and dentistry.I have worked as an intern in the summer of 2022 and 2023 under Dr. Nazila Ameli and Dr. Hollis Lai, creating a basic convolutional neural network to classify simple objects in dentistry-related settings and have presented my project in a research exhibition. In addition, I have an IBM Data Science Specialization Certificate. I have experience coding with Python (with tensorflow and keras libraries) and SQL.Outside of academics, I currently volunteer for Help Young Minds, a not-for-profit organization providing free personal tutoring service to underprivileged students. I am currently working as a lifeguard for the City of Edmonton. I have a national lifeguard certification in aquatic lifesaving, a certification in intermediate CPR and AED, and certifications as an instructor and examiner for Swim for Life and Lifesaving. I am fluent in English and Chinese and I have limited working proficiency in French.
