I was always told I have an overactive imagination. “Ben, get your head out of the clouds.”When I was young, I could come up with stories instantly in my head that would make the world fade away and a new one appear. To dream up an idea where nothing existed before and make it real is what I wanted to do in life. To write.I must admit, it got me into plenty of trouble at school where I would daydream lessons away, not listening to what the teachers were saying. Then I found IT. Another area of my life that excited my imagination and my passion. To know how it all worked, to take apart and put back together again. Play games, write programs, and learn software was fun. I started with a BBC computer at school and a PC at home running Windows 3.11. I never stopped enjoying it.While these passions were forming and I embraced them fully, I stumbled upon another area that completed the trifactor. Helping others. From my first job in a pet shop, to a network technician, I learnt to listen and understand a person’s question or worry and come back with a solution or an answer. To have someone thank you and to no longer be stuck in a conundrum, brought me great joy.So how do all these things fit together? Imagination, IT & Helping others? Well, a perfect jigsaw puzzle of IT Support.I thought that was it, I felt complete, top of my game. Until one sunny day. While working in New Zealand, I was put into a situation where I was to help a business with a critical network project, while leading another technician through the work. When the project was completed, I felt this new sense of power.Out of nowhere, the fourth piece of my puzzle appeared. Leadership. And from there, I am who I am today. An IT Manager, providing IT solutions to complicated business requirements, using my vast imagination and knowledge to draw a plan on one of my many whiteboards while leading a team through to its completion, all the while, helping those around me understand IT in a fun and non-demeaning way.But I know that it’s not the end of my journey and I look forward to the next step in my life.
