ABOUT THE TEAMSince two years our architectural en engineering office - DMOA - has been working on an innovation called 'the Maggie’ together with VERMAKO (Tielt) and VERVAEKE (Ruiselede)A temporary shelter with the benefits of a real fixed building. A highly sustainable and most efficient shelter that can last for a long time in harsh climates.We worked together with Bart Peeters, who lead in the past several international programs and operations (Doctors without borders, Caritas, Transfer European Supply).Mr.Peeters challenged us to find solutions for the definite need for high quality shelters in a difficult context where most of the time only temporary structures are allowed.NEEDSUNHCR recent news updates show that displaced people (> 65 million) on average more than 12 years in camps.So they need access to healthcare and education to keep perspective.This means an urgent need for capacity building to organize medical wards,schools, vocational training centers,…but with a high durability.CONCEPTOur Maggie is the combination of a fixed building and a temporary tent structure.An aluminium (high performance but light weight) structure covered with a double skin of tough PVC coated polyester tarpaulin.De enveloppe - once installed - can be filled up with local materials as sand, insulation and even plastic waste by local labor and materials from local economy.This ends up in a heavy (duty) construction and yet only the need to transport the light and compact skeleton (800 m2 Maggie in 1 40ft cont.)The shelter experts that have assisted in the criteria, concept, testing from the IFRC Shelter Research Unit (SRU), UNHCR, MSF-B, Disaster resources network, Special Forces BE & EU, Unicef consultant and other corporate experts.Textile supervision by Centexbel: Belgian textile research Centre.Technical info: www.maggie-shelter.com
