About Benjamin Diaz Villa

I study the multi-physics coupling of hypersonic fluid-structure interaction through experimental ground testing and reduced-order model simulations in order to push the state-of-the-art in aerothermoelasticity and make the next generation of high-speed systems a reality. I use cutting-edge optical diagnostic experimental techniques, image processing, and data analysis in order to make measurements in supersonic, hypersonic, and reacting flows with broad applications in aerospace and energy. Partnering with NASA, the U.S. Air Force (AFRL), and DARPA, my primary research facility is UT Austin’s Mach 5 and Mach 2 Blowdown Wind Tunnel, with specific relevance to hypersonic aerodynamic controls, store-separation events, jet aircraft, air-breathing propulsion, and space access.

    • Purpose of research: obtain aerodynamic measurements of hypersonic vehicle based on its aeroelastic deformations applied by hypersonic aerodynamic loads.• Analyze the aerothermo-optical effects from aerothermodynamic Mach 5 flow on digital image correlation (DIC).• Analyze the fluid-structure interaction of slender hypersonic wind tunnel models subjected to complex hypersonic flow fields, especially in cases of store separation and cavity flows.• Conduct various design iterations by coupling CFD and FEA solvers in ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Mechanical.• Numerically analyze Mach 5 flow over IC3X model in wind-tunnel conditions.• Apply user-defined functions in C++ to model the incoming walls’ boundary layer and apply it to the commercial ANSYS Fluent CFD software.• Re-create a cad drawing of the entire wind-tunnel set-up for complete, realistic CFD analysis of the shock wave boundary layer interactions with the model and support structure.• Fabricate elastic wind-tunnel model, set up support structures and optical diagnostics, calibrate pressure-sensitive paint, install strain gauges on model, and gather data from Mach 5 wind tunnel at UT Austin.
