The 8th Annual Undergraduate Seismic Design Competition asks students to apply pervious knowledge from undergraduate courses such as Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Structural Analysis, and Advanced Structural Analysis to design and build a scale structure. By applying problem solving and analysis skills, students successfully learn how design and construct a five foot tall scaled structure from balsa wood that will withstand three simulated earthquakes and meet a number of economic and design constraints. The competition is sponsored by the EERI (Engineering Earthquake Research Institute) and PEER (Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research) and requires that the team travel to San Diego, make formal presentations and demonstrate their structures.
