Food allergies have become a significant issue, with peanuts being the most prolific. Recent advances through CRISPR gene editing technology in combination with genome sequencing and annotation of the tetraploid peanut genome has opened the door for a disruptive solution. The PeanutBetter team is attempting to “knock-out” three genes of interest that play a role in eliciting the severest type of allergic reactions to peanuts. Allergenetics will create the first hypoallergenic peanut by utilizing CRISPR-CAS9 gene editing, while maintaining all the aesthetic attributes of a traditional peanut. The impact of this technology extends past those who are allergic to peanuts. The entire peanut industry has much to gain from offering a hypoallergenic peanut.
