Jul 2018 - Present

Postbacc Irta - Research Fellow

Bethesda, Md, Us

As a postbacc IRTA at the NIH, my responsibilities are numerous but mainly boil down to managing and carrying out my own research project. My project in particular has been to study the glycosylation profile of enveloped glycoproteins in viruses like Ebola and Zika. Specifically, I have studied in depth the effect on glycosylation patterns of the glycoproteins as well as infectivity of the viruses when in the presence of inhibitors of the enzymes that process and develop the glycoprotein.Techniques I use on a day to day basis include but are not limited to protein purification, cell culture, bacterial transformation, protein transfection, western blot, and flow cytometry.

Dose Formulations Research Technician

Princeton, New Jersey, Us

At Covance I worked on a team responsible for collecting and documenting pertinent data for the receipt, distribution, preparation, and disposition of test compounds and carriers/vehicles in compliance with appropriate SOPs, GLPs, and regulatory agency guidelines. On a daily basis, I prepared solutions, suspensions, capsules, and diets with test materials and vehicles per study protocols and SOP, using aseptic technique when applicable. Additionally, I was certified to handle and prepare formulations containing controlled substances.Lastly, I was trained in second person verification and review of control materials, vehicle and test article formulations. I performed quality control of data as part of my daily responsibilities.

Jun 2016 - Dec 2016

Research Intern

Bethesda, Md, Us

For four consecutive summers, I was a full-time research intern for the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke. I Performed lab work and several research projects over the course of these summers in the Immunology Branch. My work was primarily focused on Human T-Lymphotropic Virus and its simian counterpart, Simian T-Lymphotropic Virus. In my most recent project, I analyzed the complete genome of a primate T-lypmhotropic virus type I isolated from a patient with HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), using PCR to attain nine overlapping genomic fragments. Phylogenetic analysis of the env and LTR regions revealed that the virus was highly related to a PTLV-1 from sooty mangabey monkeys and humans exposed from NHPs in West Africa. My results suggest that the patient was infected with STLV-1, appearing for the first time that viral transmission from monkey to human may be associated with a chronic progressive neurologic disease.I currently have a manuscript associated with this work being reviewed by The New England Journal of Medicine.

Jun 2011 - Aug 2014

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Record Lab

Under Dr. Tom Record, I performed extensive experiments using vapor pressure osmometry to examine solute-solute interactions. Specifically, I examined the effects of various salts in the Hofmeister series on the solubility of urea and urea-like compounds when mixed in solution. My experiences here provided me with an understanding on how different solutes, depending on their properties, may affect the solubility of a given compound and also the denaturation state of a protein.
