Over 11 months, I led a team 7-8 young adults, ages 18-26, completing 5 projects over 4 states, in a residential national service program. My first project was in Jackson, Michigan, serving at a VITA/TCE Tax Preparation Site, with the Community Action Agency of Jackson. We prepared taxes for disadvantaged populations in the region. My second project brought me to Toledo, Ohio, serving with Toledo GROWS and Boy Scouts of America at Camp Miakonda. We supported community gardens around Toledo and improved the facilities at Camp.My third round project placed us in Saukville, WI with Riveredge Nature Center. The team assisted in the control of invasive species, the creation and restoration of trails, and supported the data collection of migratory bird species. My fourth round project was split in two: first at Camp Little Cloud, Epworth, IA, improving camp facilities and restoring trails. Then with Des Moines County Conservation in Sperry, IA, restoring trails, cutting back invasive species, and participating in prescribed burn.Throughout my year, I had the opportunity to learn and develop as person, gaining knowledge, skills, and experiences. I am now first aid certified, chainsaw certified, have a familiarity with a range of power tools, basic skid steer operation, use of UTVs/RTVs, prescribed burn, beekeeping basics, MI tax preparation, and many other assorted skills. In my role as a Team Leader, I was responsible for team morale, discipline, directing and supervising, leadership development, holding weekly meetings, and acting as a liaison between for project sponsors and my team. I completed weekly reports, end of project reports, recorded hours, managed budgets, and completed evaluations of my team members. I was the face of the AmeriCorps NCCC while in the field. Show less
