As a hardworking and aspiring life scientist I graduated from the University of Lincoln with a First-Class Honours degree in Biochemistry. Throughout my studies I've had ample time and opportunities to hone both my theoretical and practical skills in the fields and biology and chemistry, whilst also working on fundamental life skills like communication and organization.My 3rd year research project was awarded a First-Class overall, with its aim being to investigate the methods by which the subcellular localisation of two cytidine deaminase enzymes, named APOBEC3B & APOBEC3C, were regulated. Using fluorescently tagged 3B and 3C proteins expressed via recombinant U2OS cells, I would examine the effects of inhibiting Nuclear Import and Export pathways on their cellular localisation. During this research I learned and applied various wet lab techniques for RNA, DNA, Protein and Cell isolation; DNA recombination; Cell transformation and Cell culturing, as well as many other standard lab practices. Additionally, in order to observe the characteristics of the proteins and how they were affected I became proficient in the use of a Leica TCS SP8 / DMI6000 Confocal Microscope, becoming more well versed in FRET and FRAP analysis. After concluding my research within the laboratory, I went on to present findings in a concise and coherent manner via a dissertation write-up as well as a presentation of a research poster at a conference.All through my degree I would become a member of the University of Lincoln’s Biochemistry and Biomedical Societies, allowing me plenty of opportunities to engage in talks with academics, both professors and students, across the fields of biology and chemistry, discussing ongoing research and ideas.I try to stay fit and regularly train in both my home gym and the gym at my local Rugby club where I played mini and Junior rugby from 2010 until 2017. On top of the strength training, I also cycle and run throughout the week, increasing my cardio fitness as well.On top of my keen interest in the fields of the Life Sciences I also enjoy working with technology. Owning my own gaming computer, I’m skilled in the usage of the Microsoft office suite and other equivalent open-source alternatives, in addition to undergoing other IT ventures such as coding and content creation. Owing to its reasonably powerful graphics processor I also use Computer-aided design (CAD) programs such as FreeCAD and Blender on my PC, mainly creating 3D models that can then be quickly manufactured using my Creality Ender-3 V2 3D printer.
