Advisor: Prof. Peter Belenky NGS tools combined with traditional microbiology to define antibiotic resistance development and prevalence of resistance in the marine environment- Experience in NGS sample preparation, PCR, 16s sequencing, shotgun metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing, Nanopore MinION Sequencing, NGS data analysis utilizing R and Python, bacterial cloning, ELISAs, flow cytometry, anaerobic bacterial culture, SEM and confocal fluorescent microscopy, traditional microbiological assays- Utilized next-generation sequencing techniques to understand the evolution of antibiotic resistance mutations, define the microbiome and resistome of marine organisms, and illustrate the impact of antibiotic therapy on the murine resistome.- Performed metagenomic/metatranscriptomic sequencing and analysis of antibiotic treated mouse microbiomes to illustrate the importance of utilizing transcriptomics to understand the impact of antibiotic therapy on the activity of resistant microbes- Utilized amplicon and whole genome sequencing in combination with bacterial mutagenesis, selection, and competition assays to define the impacts of genotoxic stressors on the evolution of antibiotic resistance mutations- Defined the microbiome, dietary contents, and antimicrobial resistance gene diversity within marine fish/sharks utilizing shotgun metagenomic sequencing and analysis- Mentored and trained five undergraduates and two graduate students- Established both intra and inter-institutional collaborations
