While still attending graduate school, Ben had the opportunity to work in partnership with the National Forest Service to provide place based, community environmental education programs to an undeserved community in the Skagit Valley.Ben's primary role was to lead the newer graduate cohort in best practices for the program, but he also did whatever tasks were asked of him to ensure the safety and education of the students.

Stehekin, Washington

Ben had the opportunity to live and teach in the most remote town in the lower 48: Stehekin. Located at the end of Lake Chelan, visitors could only get into the town by boat or hiking: there are no roads leading into Stehekin.During those three months Ben not only learned the unique perspective of environmental education of the National Park Service but also learned valuable life lessons from the local community.

Diablo Lake, Wa

On the shores of Diablo Ben taught 5th grade students every week. Over the three day adventure, he would lead them up trails and to waterfalls to learn about the unique abiotic and biotic relationships happening in the North Cascades National Park.

Ben maintained the institute's blog Chattermarks while also contributing his own writing.

Manchester, New Hampshire

At City Year Ben worked in a fourth grade classroom with a certified teacher with 32 students throughout the entire year. Experiencing this furthered Ben's passion for teaching students. Working in a small team of seven, all of the corps members also helped with after school activities.

For two years Ben worked under Dr. James Niblock. He set up chairs for the ensembles, fitted robes for the choir, and during concerts helped to make sure all equipment was where it needed to be.

As a "Gator Guide," or tour guide, Ben would tour families around Allegheny College, making sure they would get a personalized experience. While not touring he would file, sort, and alphabetize files for Admissions.

It was his job to teach campers about the wilderness at Lutherlyn through experiential learning activities such as catching organisms in the stream, tasting edible plants, and gathering soil samples. He also designed his own lesson plan in which students went on a "spider hike" to gather and study spiders.

Ben would teach students who came on field-trips to Camp Lutherlyn about the ecosystems, wildlife, and geology of Western Pennsylvania through experiential learning.

Ben was a counselor for Camp Lutherlyn for two summers. During that time he lead a cabin of campers each week through various activities like canoeing, singing, and Bible Study.

Ben would make sure that the food that the cooks had prepared was out on the serving lines along with overseeing the work of the "Kitchen Persons."
