Benjamin is an experienced designer in architecture, master planning, and urban design. Previously a Director at Farrells, (2000-2022) established by internationally renowned architect-planner Terry Farrell, Benjamin led many designs of award-winning projects worldwide.From the 100-storey skyscraper KK100 in Shenzhen to the Vattanac Capital’s culturally responsive design in Phnom Penh, Benjamin’s design solutions are innovative and multi-faceted, through research and design explorations. With many published drawings, Benjamin is a proficient narrative designer who can communicate complex ideas with exceptional critical thinking skills.Benjamin graduated from Melbourne School of Design (The University of Melbourne) with an honours degree in Architecture. A short time at Norman Foster’s office was followed by a scholarship to study the Master of Philosophy in architecture. Benjamin joined Farrells Hong Kong in 2000 and subsequently relocated to Farrells’ London office, where he worked closely with Terry Farrell on several masterplans in the United Kingdom. Benjamin took up the design director role after returning to Farrells Hong Kong in 2006. With his leadership, Farrells’ creative team has won many international architecture competitions.As a passionate urbanist, Benjamin’s design philosophy is rooted in contextual sensitivity and an intimate understanding of ‘place’. His work on revitalising an urban village, Swiss Cottage in central London, demonstrated how a modernist icon (heritage-listed library) can be leveraged as an urban catalyst to create a new civic-cultural hub.During the 2010s, Benjamin led some of the practice’s large-scale mixed-use projects, including the competition-winning design of six interconnected skyscrapers One Excellence in Shenzhen, where ‘multi-level streetscapes’ create lively interplays between different functions. Intertwining the public realm with architecture was also the key design force for the Shanghai Shipyard regeneration project. Aside from commercial development, Benjamin has also been involved in public infrastructure and government works. His transportation portfolio includes Asia’s largest railway station in Guangzhou South, Singapore High-Speed Rail Terminus, New Delhi Railway Station, and the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Express Rail Link.On the academic side, Benjamin is a frequent visiting speaker and critic at universities and industry events. He has been teaching architecture at the University of Melbourne since 2020. In addition, Benjamin has been curating architectural exhibitions internationally.
