We were required to order fuel, aircraft oils/lubricants, aircraft ground equipment, parking of all the visiting aircraft including static/flying displays and assisting aircrew/ground crew in See in’s/off’s during and after the show. I oversaw complex maintenance on electrical, Air-to-Air refueling, avionic, hydraulic and environmental control systems. In this role I was able to keep morale high and instill in my colleagues an attitude that our task, no matter how big was always achievable. I was chosen to work as part of the project team to assist the civilian contractor, Northop Gruman, with the initial fitment of the Dircm/Laircm aircraft defensive systems based on my extensive technical experience. This involved running a small detachment of technicians at very short notice and with limited resources in the event of system failures in various hostile/inclement areas of the world. As an Avionic and electrical technician working at 216 squadron I specialised in maintenance, replacement, and overhaul of the aircraft computer flying control systems. In addition to this I was trained in the intricacies of Air to Air refueling systems. This required me to perform problem solving on a highly complex refueling system capable of delivering 140 tonnes of fuel at extremely high pressures and flow rates controlled by a ‘Led Ex’ operating system. In this first line environment quick thinking and system knowledge was key in ensuring the aircraft met its tasking on time and with the capability it demanded. I thrived on the pressures and the vital nature of the role and so I was deployed around the globe. I have operated throughout Europe, Iraq, Afghanistan, North and South America. I found operating in such arduous conditions requires a certain amount of improvisation, and I relished those various challenges. Show less
