I was posted to the USA for three months to convert to the new Seasprite being introduced by the RNZN.Following this conversion and return to New Zealand, I was a member of the small team (2-4 people) writing the Standard Operating Procedures and other operational manuals that were fundamental in introducing the new aircraft.When the aircraft arrived in New Zealand, I piloted the first flight in country and was at the fore of the introduction, culminating in a four-month… Show more I was posted to the USA for three months to convert to the new Seasprite being introduced by the RNZN.Following this conversion and return to New Zealand, I was a member of the small team (2-4 people) writing the Standard Operating Procedures and other operational manuals that were fundamental in introducing the new aircraft.When the aircraft arrived in New Zealand, I piloted the first flight in country and was at the fore of the introduction, culminating in a four-month deployment as the sole pilot and aircraft captain on the first deployment with the new aircraft. The deployment included a missile firing in Hawaii with parties attending from around the world. This event saw me at the spear (captain of the aircraft firing the missile) of a multi-national, multi-million dollar event. As the Tasking Officer, I was responsible for running the Squadron programme – both flying and ground-based activities. The Squadron had 90 personnel, consisting of flight, maintenance and support personnel. I developed my management and leadership, as well as operations’ planning and execution. During this time, I brought in several innovations that streamlined the planning process using existing, cost-effective technologies.

During this time, I planned and executed multi-week deployments in NZ. Responsible for operations, logistics and maintenance planning, while deploying as the sole pilot on naval operations. I developed a good ability to work in low-supervision environments.

I completed my pilots' training with the RNZAF over 2 years. I completed the basic phase in a single-engine, CT4-E Airtrainer, and the advanced phase on the twin-turboprop B200 Kingair. The course covered theory topics ranging from aviation meteorology to aircraft performance, and practical phases basic flying, navigation, instrument flying, aerobatics, formation and night flying.

During basic training I began to develop skills in time management, discipline, leadership and management, amongst other things.
