About Benjamin Monkton

I am a Mechanical Engineer who enjoys solving technically challenging engineering problems. I have a strong background in bespoke equipment design for the process industries, with experience in Water, Nuclear and Oil and Gas. My current role involves taking a pilot design and developing it into a system which can be manufactured, tested and deployed globally to remediate oily sludge and polluted ground. The technologies used in the system are unique and novel requiring me to rely upon my engineering judgment and analysis skills to deliver the best solutions to the various systems for optimum plant design. My key areas of expertise include structural analysis of steel work, pipework and vessels by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and hand calculations. Process optimisation calculations, including heat transfer and pipe flows and selecting the optimum process equipment based on analysis outcomes when considering OPEX and capital costs.

Each project is a bespoke design with interesting engineering problems to be solved, as Lead Mechanical Engineer my role involves: Analytical support to project teams to ensure that designs meet structural and performance requirements; normally consisting of stress analysis of support and lifting structures and piping/pressure components, flow calculations to verify pressure loses, power and torque calculations, heat transfer calculations and pump performance calculations for equipment selection. Responsibility for overseeing and improving the mechanical and process integrity of new designs and development projects from concept to detailed design. Capturing stakeholder requirements throughout the design cycle and turning these into a functional description for both design and control requirements.Providing input to solving in service equipment failure or running problems and producing root cause analysis reports when required. Leading research and development tasks into new products and different ways to operate and or design systems to achieve a more efficient product in terms of cost, serviceability and product integrity. Developing in house design standards to ensure good knowledge transfer between departments and Engineers. Developing in house analytical tools and provide training/assistance to other Engineers with using analysis packages and any in house analysis tools. Develop and administer a companywide design review system. Reviewing company products against various European directives and produce technical files to support CE marking, typically including ATEX, PED and the Machinery Directive. Show less

The designs are developed from a concept tender design into a detailed design complete with all detailed drawings and bill of materials. Providing the definition of factory acceptance testing and supporting the factory acceptance test. Checking and controlling 3D models and detailed design drawings to company standards. Undertaking system performance calculations, typically these include head loss calculations, heat transfer calculations, and pressure relief valve sizing. Undertaking system structural calculations, typically base-frame deflection and stress checks, static blast case loading on containers/noise enclosures and analysis of pressure containing components to in house and international standards, ie ASME VIII. Provide concessions for in service design changes, typically nozzle loads on equipment due to client pipework modification. Review of clients feed pipework to ensure that flow and pressure conditions at skid edge will be suitable for supplied process equipment.
