I lead a small group experimentally studying quantum mechanical effects in superconducting devices. Our cavity QED devices consist of a superconducting cavity coupled to a superconducting Josephson junction shunted with a capacitor. We cool these devices to very low-temperatures (~10 milliKelvin), using a He3-He4 dilution refrigerator, which passively cools the state of the system to the ground state. By sending a microwave pulse with the correct properties (e.g. frequency, amplitude, duration, etc.), we are able to create states with a single microwave photon stored in our circuit or even a superposition of these states.
