Wrote job instruction manuals for automotive manufacturer. Began working for one engineer but three other engineers requested I write for them after seeing my work. Wrote instructions for extrusion, injection molding, nylon tube bending and capless fuel injection manufacturing. Laid off with other contractors due to auto industry downturn.

Began as education reporter, then promoted to city and county reporter. Promoted after eight months to assistant editor; responsible for daily writing, photography, page layout (between two and six news pages) and copy editing.

Responsible for entire news section of alternative weekly in Lansing, MI. Covered City Hall and other city news and assigned stories to interns and freelance reporters. Edited those stories and, together with my own, planned and laid out news section each week with Quark and Photoshop. Also took pictures as needed.

The newspaper was based in Watertown but had a St. Lawrence County bureau to the north. There were four major villages in the county and each reporter was responsible for one; mine was Potsdam, where I lived and where I was the only WDT reporter. Covered four colleges (two there, two in Canton), three school districts, village news, township news.

Covered Michigan state government. Mostly covered House and Senate committee meetings, events at the Capitol and other state-related news. Entered information about bills into computer system for our subscribers. Brainstormed and wrote 10-part series on Michigan counties, examining one county each week representing the state's different industries.

Wrote news and feature articles for weekly paper in Michigan's thumb. Wrote mostly features and agricultural news, covered events and localized national and state stories for local readers. Wrote and laid out most of July 4 special festival insert.
