I was born in Killarney Manitoba where I grew up on the family farm. As kids, my brothers and I were quickly introduced to machinery operation, repair, and maintenance. Once we were old enough all of us were in the field driving, fixing, and maintaining the equipment. Due to this unique upbringing, I constantly consider how my designs will be built, maintained and repaired and can reflect on the design choices I saw as a kid and note whether they helped or hindered.Throughout my career I have taken the same approach to the machinery I design by looking at every design choice and evaluating what was good and what needs tweaking. Continuous improvement is what has allowed me to develop as an engineer and creates a mindset conducive to new and innovative ideas. To further evaluate my designs I like to discuss my designs with the fabricators and assemblers and hear what they feel were good or bad decisions. When time allows I like to work alongside them to experience this myself as nothing will give you a clearer picture of a design's success than dealing with the issues yourself.Even in my free time I like getting my hands dirty. As an avid mountain biker, scuba diver, and woodworker I can often be caught surrounded by tools, disassembling equipment, or in a pile of sawdust. Few things in life are as satisfying as turning chunks of wood into a guitar, or making your bike shift like new again.
