My academic foundation includes a PhD in Zoology from the University of Hawaii, focusing on coral reef ecology. My career is marked by significant achievements in research and strategic initiatives.I'm proud of my role leading the Bottomfish Fishery-Independent Survey in Hawaii (BFISH), where I've facilitated the design, planning, and execution of intricate projects, leveraging advanced technologies and methodologies. This initiative has delivered essential data for stock assessment and also initiated improvements in survey effectiveness and efficiency.I am a known leader in the space of artificial intelligence in marine sciences, chairing the NOAA Artificial Intelligence Executive Committee and the NMFS Automated Image Analysis Strategic Initiative. My work has centered around integrating AI and Machine Learning to automate marine life analysis from photographic and videographic surveys, significantly increasing standardization and efficiency in stock assessment.Recognitions for my commitment to innovation and scientific advancement include the United States Department of Commerce's Gold and Bronze Medals for Scientific and Technical Achievement, and NOAA Fisheries' Silver Sherman Award.As I look forward, I aim to continue leveraging my skills and experiences to deepen our understanding and stewardship of marine environments.
