About Benjamin Robson
With over three years of experience as an Associate Professor in Geomatics at the University of Bergen, I am interested in advancing our understanding of glacial and periglacial environments through a range of remote sensing and geomatic techniques. I use a variety of methods and datasets to characterise and quantify how the cryosphere is changing in a variety of catchments in Norway, Chile, and Nepal.My expertise encompasses a broad spectrum of analytical tools and approaches, such as machine learning, image classification, photogrammetry, structure from motion, and synthetic aperture radar. I have successfully applied these methods to interpret complex geospatial data and quantify cryospheric changes. I am participarly interested in combining various geospatial datasets such as aerial and satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicle point clouds, and laser scanning data in order to quantify rates of change. Beyond my research, I have over a decade of experience in education and mentorship at the university level, teaching various courses and supervising projects for Master's and Ph.D. students. I am supervising MSc and PhD projects on topics including photogrammetry, InSAR, and the use of artificial intelligence and trustworthy mapping for creating cryospheric inventories. I am also involved in capacity building and summer schools, contributing to the dissemination and transfer of knowledge and skills in remote sensing and geomatics. I use a variety of open-source and commercial software on a daily basis, covering topics on photogrammetry, image classification, radar data, and python programming. I am always eager to learn new techniques and share my insights with others.

I am using remote sensing imagery to investigate recent glacier fluctuations in the Nepali Himalayas and Austrian Alps. Additionally, I am interested in automating glacier monitoring and mapping from satellite imagery. The specific components of my PhD are:-Glacier mapping using Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA)I have used OBIA to map glaciers in a variety of settings using satellite data. I used SAR coherence data in combination with optical and topographic data to map debris-covered glaciers in the Nepali Himalayas, edge detection on a LiDAR DEM to map debris-covered glaciers in the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria, and automatically derived thresholds to create a fully automatic workflow for mapping glaciers over the entire Norwegian mainland.-Volume and velocity calculations of Himalayan glaciers using remote sensing.I created Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from declassified US spy photography (Corona) from the 1960s and 1970s and compared them to recent DEMs to work out surface lowerings. Additoinally, by matching features between successive images, I calculated velocities, and the change in velocities for the glaciers.-Structure from Motion (SfM) to create a high resolution 3D model of Nigardsbreen.By attaching a GoPro camera to the bottom of a light aircraft, I took approximately 1000 overlapping photos of Nigardsbreen, a glacier in Norway. Using mostly automated processing it was possible to create a very high resolution (30 cm) DEM and orthophotos for the glacier.
