I am a highly committed and passionate railway professional. I have a wide and deep experience of operating railways, and more recently specifying and building railways. My career has given me direct experience of the following activities:• Infrastructure management• Defining operations concepts and requirements• Signalling operations• Operational planning• Performance improvement• Signaller and traincrew management• Accident investigation• Union negotiation• Customer service deliveryI spent my early career gaining frontline experience of running railways. My first mentor encouraged me to really understand what was needed to run a railway. He was absolutely right to encourage me to take my time and do this properly. I learned to signal trains. I responded to incidents. I managed frontline staff. I made mistakes. I had a great time. I learned many valuable lessons.Over time I focussed more on leading the teams of people who run railways safely and efficiently. Initially teams of signallers and controllers, but later on traincrew and station staff. I was determined to understand the full scope of the rail industry and not to be stuck in one of the silos that rail privatisation had created. I am proud of some significant achievements along the way. Changing how the industry manages disruption and provides information to customers. Introducing longer trains and more frequent services. Using simulators to improve how operators are trained and developed. Improving performance across three different train operators. Keeping trains running during periods of extreme weather. Giving something back by authoring parts of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators Handbook.In recent years I have been using my experience to help High Speed Two build an amazing new railway. I am the author of the HS2 operational concept. I focus the programme on what needs to be true to make HS2 a superb experience for customers and a commercial success. I work with the wider industry to make sure HS2 integrates with the national network. I am a tireless advocate for right to left thinking in the management of this programme.

CurrentI lead the team that will be the future operator and maintainer of the High Speed Two railway infrastructure. I am the HS2 technical authority for operations and maintenance. I am building the operating organisation ready to receive the HS2 railway once it is completed. I work with partners from across the rail industry to ensure that HS2 is integrated.
