Profile bio

About Benjamin Steimle

I'm Ben, a Ph. D. Chemist who graduated from Penn State. I am now working as a Senior Scientist at DuPont with the Interconnect Solutions team.I work as part of a collaborative, global team to develop advanced metal finishes for interconnects used in electronic devices. I am able to leverage my inorganic and materials chemistry knowledge and experience in surface and materials characterization to facilitate the development of electroplating formulations for customers with a range of end-use applications. I have extensive experience in the synthesis and characterization of nanoscale materials. My PhD dissertation focused on developing approaches to synthesize nanoscale inorganic materials, especially those that form one or more interfaces between two or more dissimilar materials. I worked at the forefront of synthetic discovery in cation exchange reactions to create highly complex, multicomponent heterostructures and identified previously unknown reaction intermediates. During this collaborative work, we discovered generalized, scalable reaction pathways that we used to construct highly sophisticated nanoscale materials with complete control over particle size and shape, material composition, crystal structure, and interface formation. For my Postdoc, I transitioned to colloidal materials processing and the development of colloidal inks for 3D printing applications. I work as part of a collaborative, multi university research initiative to discover stimulus responsive artificial soils and meta-structured inks with tailored rheological responses. I have explored mixtures of inorganic colloidal materials that range in size from a few nanometers to tens of microns with controlled surface chemistry, interparticle interactions, and rheological behavior.
