Dr. Benjamin Welch just started a new exciting opportunity where he will combine his business experience and strong technical background to develop new applications of camera systems produced by Canon of Virginia. He is working as a Principle Engineer in the Business Development Engineering Group.Previously, he has served as the Vice President of Science and Technology at Dilon Diagnostics, a successful startup company that manufacturers a camera used for Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) to detect breast cancer. He was the technical lead in the development of the Dilon 6800 gamma camera and the GammaLoc stereotactic localization system which included: the development of the products, designing and carrying out the clinical studies, the FDA approval and NRC registration, and ultimately the product launch and market introduction. He received a BS degree from the College of William and Mary, a MS degree from the University of Miami and a PhD degree from the University of Maryland, all in Physics. His thesis involved X-ray laser research at the Naval Research Laboratory. He continued at U of M as an Associate Research Scientist, involved in spectroscopic diagnostics of a prototype fusion reactor (Alcator C-Mod) at MIT and measurements in the vacuum-ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions on laser produced plasmas at the University of Maryland, the University of Rochester (Omega Laser) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.His scientific publications include thirty-five referred publications, fifty conference publications and over 100 conference presentations. He has also been an author on seven patents; six have been awarded and one is still pending. He received the Federal Laboratory Consortium “Excellence in Technology Transfer” award for work with the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and the Alan Berman Research Publication award for work with the Naval Research Laboratory.
