Intern: Environmental Technician And Gis Technician
CurrentI began working primarily on the Impervious Mapping Project where we delineate structures that intercept precipitation like rooftops and pavement inside certain basins within Escambia County using GIS software, but after working on that for some time, a project using GIS analysis was assigned to me that involves correlating zoning information or wetland data around Naval Air Station Pensacola with undeveloped parcels to establish a preliminary structure for the priority of property acquisitions involved with grant funding to limit population densities in the crash zone and to establish environmentally protected areas. The majority of my time as an environmental technician is spent on the Low Impact Design projects at the COC where they have the largest green roof in Florida and pervious concrete in the parking lot to match, and my services there involved biological monitoring via flora species diversity transects across the ten basins, collecting groundwater discharges of said basin for the COC lab along with running field tests for alkalinity, and performing percolation tests for the pervious concrete. As a field assistant, I participate in the Surface Water Quality Monitoring Project where samples are collected to be analyzed for various bacteria agents, and using a couple of devices, we take several field parameters such as temperature, salinity, conductivity, pH, and turbidity.Additionally, I am researching storm event conversions to overland flow across the county as a self directed study to better understand and possibly develop a model for how runoff via storm water effects county on a multi-basin scale.
