My passion is helping to improve government management, particularly at the local level. I work across Oregon and the region to improve outcomes for communities and their residents, while training the next generation of public leaders. In a lot of my research I have been focusing on building an understanding of how technology can change cities and city government. I also look at the phenomena of coproduction and public sector crowdsourcing. I have largely focused this research work on local governments and how they might use coproduction and crowdsourcing. The specific types of examples I have been focused on lately include the use 311 systems, smartphone applications, web-based reporting portals, Internet of Things for decision making, and open data portals.I have also an interest in improving our understanding of local government budget management and fiscal health/condition measures. Keywords to describe my specialties past and present, include Autonomous Vehicles; Public Management; Government 2.0; Citizen Engagement; Open311; Open Government; Public Finance/Budgeting; Public Health; Environmental Policy and Management; Science & Technology Policy; IoT.
