Caravan was a social enterprise seeking to improve transportation and mobility for Detroit's neighborhood residents in partnership with local nonprofits. Using hypothesis-driven experimentation, iterative business model design and validated learning through customer discovery, we disproved 5 business models through 200+ interviews in which we learned about managing federal grants, acquiring insurance, enabling B2B carsharing, and beyond.

These courses spanned several topic areas; Environ 382: Intro to Environmental Education for Sustainable Development, Sociology 100: Introduction to Sociology, and Sociology 102: Globalization and Society. I was nominated and selected as the Winter 2017 Outstanding PitE Graduate Student Instructor from The University of Michigan.

Using human-centered design techniques and Participatory Analysis for Community Action (PACA) tools, we designed shared-use mobility services with communities rather than for communities. We partnered with Focus:HOPE, a Detroit-based nonprofit to explore the needs and the barriers to shared-use mobility within their community. I am the Co-Author of the report: “Assessing Barriers to Carsharing and Ridesharing in HOPE Village Detroit," which helped inform initial steps for Caravan, a social enterprise I cofounded after the completion of this fellowship.

As a policy-focused intern, I led a team of 17 DNR employees to revise, update and review three internal Parks and Recreation Division policies. I also spearheaded an innovative social science research project, which collected 100+ survey responses from Michigan State Park day-use visitors’ in order to evaluate satisfaction levels, park perceptions, willingness-to-pay and customer loyalty. I also surveyed 22 U.S. departments of natural resources and synthesized subsequent data to inform key recommendations for a Michigan Technical Trail Handbook and associated Michigan Trail Policy.

I developed and executed the 2015-2016 University of Michigan Peace Corps Office Strategic Recruitment Plan, coordinated and supervised the Peace Corps Assistant Recruiter and five Peace Corps Interns and collaborated with 30+ key stakeholders to organize and facilitate 40+ annual information sessions, career fair events and classroom talks and conduct one-on-one advising sessions with 100+ prospective applicants per year.Served as Master of Ceremonies for the 55th Anniversary of the establishment of the Peace Corps events (October 13-14, 2015) at the University of Michigan.

As a member of the second environment group in Peace Corps Ethiopia since 2007, I partnered with USAID's Feed the Future Initiative to address food security through community-initiated projects and workshops. I designed an innovative educational curriculum, Kids for Kids, and produced 10 music videos designed to foster behavior-change in high-priority health, education and environment topics. I also pioneered a community-based ecotourism cooperative with Millennium Village Projects, an American Non-Governmental Organization and trained 15+ managers, cooperative members and tour guides in ecotourism theory, business strategy, hospitality concepts, Ethiopian tourism policy and environmental conservation.I was elected Peer Support Network (PSN) Committee Chair Person where I linked Peace Corps staff to 200+ volunteers and coordinated 18 PSN members to provide emotional support and facilitate 20+ assimilation workshops and excursions. Finally, I authored and successfully obtained funds for a Peace Corps Partnership Grant totaling $3,434.33 and a U.S. Agency for International Development, Feed the Future (USAID-FTF) Grant totaling $8,699.78 for a youth camp.

I coordinated fieldwork for Olive Ridley sea turtle conservation and investigation amd created and edited a bi-lingual interpretive educational sign project for sea turtle conservation that was implemented at the wildlife refuge, a local elementary school and within the community of Montezuma. I also trained 54 volunteers on proper composting and gardening techniques and completed 400 hours of volunteer work, which satisfied CSU internship requirements.
